When do Europe's Christmas markets open and close in 2026?

Most of the 161 Christmas markets with 2026 dates in our files open between 13 and 28 November and close between 20 and 24 December, and the season as a whole runs from 6 November in Vienna and Copenhagen to 10 January 2027 in Cologne. The tables below hold all 164 markets this site follows in nine countries. Every row comes from that market's fact sheet, which we checked against the organizer's or the tourism board's page on 10 October 2026, and the status beside each date tells you who stands behind it. We computed the counts in this guide from those files with the season engine that also runs the what's open on a date page.

Country	Markets	First opening	Last closing	Confirmed	Announced	Projected	No dates yet
Germany	65	Fri 13 Nov (confirmed)	Sun 10 Jan 2027 (confirmed)	55	9	1	0
Austria	40	Fri 6 Nov (confirmed)	Wed 6 Jan 2027 (confirmed)	35	3	1	1
France	22	Fri 20 Nov (confirmed)	Sun 3 Jan 2027 (confirmed)	12	3	7	0
Switzerland	12	Thu 19 Nov (confirmed)	Sun 27 Dec (confirmed)	11	1	0	0
Czechia	7	Fri 13 Nov (confirmed)	Wed 6 Jan 2027 (confirmed)	7	0	0	0
Hungary	4	Fri 13 Nov (confirmed)	Sat 9 Jan 2027 (projected)	2	0	2	0
Belgium	3	Fri 20 Nov (announced)	Sun 3 Jan 2027 (confirmed)	2	1	0	0
Netherlands	5	Fri 13 Nov (confirmed)	Sun 3 Jan 2027 (confirmed)	5	0	0	0
Denmark	6	Fri 6 Nov (confirmed)	Sun 3 Jan 2027 (confirmed)	3	1	0	2

France's seven projected runs are Strasbourg's markets. The city has confirmed their opening day and left the closing day open, and a run counts as projected until both ends are published.

How does this site label each date?

Every date carries the status of the page it came from, and the label sits right beside the date on each market page. The site uses five labels, and two of them have no 2026 runs at all so far.

Label	What it means	Markets with this label for 2026
Confirmed	The organizer's own page or notice states the 2026 dates.	126
Announced	A tourism board or another reliable page states the dates before the organizer does.	21
Projected	Nothing is published yet, so we work the dates out from the pattern the market has kept in past years.	14
Cancelled	The organizer has called the season off, with a source.	0
Moved	The dates changed after publication, and the market page keeps the old ones beside the new.	0

A projection starts from a rule. Nuremberg's Christkindlesmarkt opens on the Friday before the first Sunday of Advent, for example, and the Vienna Christmas Market at Rathausplatz opens two Fridays before Totensonntag. The engine turns a rule like that into calendar days for any year, which is how the what's open on a date page answers for a market whose organizer is still silent. It labels those answers as projected every time.

One run carries one status for both its ends, so a run with a confirmed opening and an unpublished close still reads as projected. Strasbourg's markets sit in that spot this year, with Friday 27 November confirmed by the city and 24 December taken from past seasons. Each Strasbourg page says which half is firm, and so does the Strasbourg dates guide. The Bad Ischl Artisans' Christmas Market works the same way, because the Salzkammergut tourist board lists its opening and nobody has posted its last day.

What are the 2026 dates in each country?

The tables sort each country by base town and then by opening day. A base town is the town whose page the market belongs to, so Monschau sits under Aachen and Traben-Trarbach under Bernkastel-Kues. Click a market for its hours, its closures and the source behind its dates.

German markets mostly wait for Totensonntag (the Sunday of the dead), which falls on 22 November in 2026, and several of the early openers close for that day. The German opening guide explains the pattern and the Sunday guide goes through the closures state by state. A few markets here keep set days. The Monschau Christmas Market opens Friday to Sunday on four Advent weekends, and the Lindau Harbour Christmas Market runs Thursday to Sunday. The Ravenna Gorge Christmas Market also keeps Thursday to Sunday, with timed tickets. Michelstadt Christmas Market shuts every Monday and Tuesday, and the Mosel Wine Christmas Market (Traben-Trarbach) trades on weekends only.

Austria starts the season. The Schonbrunn Palace Christmas Market and the Stephansplatz Christmas Market open on 6 November, and most of Vienna's other squares join on 13 November along with Innsbruck's old town. Plenty of the smaller Austrian markets open on chosen days only. The Wachau Advent in Durnstein runs on four long weekends and the Schloss Hof Christmas Market on 14 days. The Hallstatt Christmas Market opens on 8 December only. The Salzkammergut tourist board lists that day, and the town hall had not confirmed it when we checked. The Belvedere Christmas Village is due to move to the Teichhof area by the pond, and no operator had published dates for it by 10 October.

Copenhagen's Christmas in Tivoli shuts for Christmas Eve and reopens on Christmas Day. The Christiania Christmas Market runs every December according to Den Grå Hal, and its 2026 dates weren't out on 10 October. Nobody had named an organizer or a date for the Nyhavn Christmas Market by then.

Which days do the most markets open?

Two Fridays account for 63 of the 161 openings. On 20 November 31 markets open, and on 27 November another 32 do. The first is the Friday before Totensonntag, when Munich, Aachen and Graz start along with the Wolfgangsee markets at St Gilgen and St Wolfgang. The second is the Friday before the first Sunday of Advent. Nuremberg, Würzburg, Annaberg-Buchholz and Seiffen open that day, and Strasbourg joins them this year.

Friday 13 November comes next with 19 openings, led by Vienna, Innsbruck, Budapest and Valkenburg. Monday 23 November has 18. Twelve of them are German markets waiting for the first weekday after Totensonntag, and the other six are Colmar's.

Which markets stay open after Christmas?

Of the 161 markets with dates, 53 keep going past Christmas Day. Prague's Old Town and Wenceslas Square markets run to 6 January 2027, and so do the Schonbrunn Palace Christmas Market, the Baden-Baden Christkindelsmarkt, the Stallhof market in Dresden and two of Innsbruck's markets. Tivoli and Brussels Winter Wonders finish on 3 January.

Several of them pause around the holidays, so check the day itself. Heinzels Wintermarchen (Cologne Old Town) closes on 24 and 25 December, and the Medieval Christmas Market in the Stallhof, Dresden takes 24 to 26 December off and again 31 December and 1 January. The Christmas Eve page and the 27 to 30 December page list what trades on those days, with hours.

Which 2026 dates are still projected?

Eleven markets have projected runs on 10 October 2026, and three more have no dates at all. Strasbourg accounts for seven of the eleven, and the city has confirmed the opening day of each. Budapest has two of them, the Városháza Park and Óbuda markets. The other two are the Gengenbach Adventsmarkt, whose published dates carry no year, and the Bad Ischl Artisans' Christmas Market, which has announced its opening day and nothing after it. Munich's Residenz village and Chinese Tower market, CentrO in Oberhausen and Art Advent at Karlsplatz in Vienna all published their 2026 dates this month.

Book anything that hangs on a projected date with free cancellation. A market page changes its status the day we read the organizer's new notice.

A projected date on Christmas in Europe is one we computed from the rule a market has followed in past years, because the organizer hasn't published the 2026 dates yet. It changes to confirmed or announced once someone publishes.
