Access and crowds
- Toilets
- In 2025 the paid public toilets sat inside the Rathaus at Hauptmarkt 18, with the way in from the Rathausplatz, at 50 cents. A second paid toilet trailer stood on the Obstmarkt behind the Frauenkirche.
- Getting around
- During the 2025 market, works in the Lorenzer Passage closed the direct route from the Lorenzkirche U-Bahn station toward the Hauptmarkt, and passengers came up by the escalator to Karolinenstraße or the stairs to Königstraße. Check whether the works still run before you plan a step-free route for 2026.
- Busiest
- The city counted more than 2 million visits to the 2024 market. The market's own arrival page points drivers to the signposted Park and Ride sites, especially on Advent weekends.
The city runs the market itself, and its 2026 notice confirms the run from Friday 27 November to Thursday 24 December on the Hauptmarkt, with more stalls spilling toward the Rathausplatz and the Lorenzkirche. In 2025 there were 168 stalls run by 180 traders, and 140 of them stood on the Hauptmarkt itself. The market's own pages trace its roots back to 1530 and give 1678 as the year it was first named outright.
Stall rules decide a lot of what you see. The city admits goods tied to Christmas and local craft, and it shuts out rides and sales demonstrations, so you shop for Nürnberger Lebkuchen, fruit bread, glass and tin ornaments, nativity figures, Rauschgoldengel (gold-foil angels) and Zwetschgenmännle, the little figures made from dried prunes. Disposable cups and plates aren't allowed at the food and Glühwein stalls. Your Glühwein arrives in a ceramic deposit mug, which plenty of visitors keep as a souvenir.
Opening night is the big draw. The market pauses at 17:25 on 27 November 2026, the square goes dark at 17:30, and the Christkind speaks the Prolog from the gallery of the Frauenkirche to a packed Hauptmarkt. Several broadcasters carry it live if you'd rather watch from a warm room. The Christkind is a young person a jury picks for a two-year term, and the one chosen in 2025 serves through 2026.
Two smaller markets sit a few minutes' walk apart. The Kinderweihnacht on the Hans-Sachs-Platz has carousels and a little train for small children, and the Markt der Partnerstädte on the Rathausplatz sells food and crafts from Nuremberg's twin towns. The Feuerzangenbowle (rum-soaked sugar burned over hot punch) is served by the Fleischbrücke on the Pegnitz, which makes a good meeting point when the square is full.
Worth knowing
- Stand facing the Frauenkirche well before 17:30 on 27 November 2026 if you want to see the Christkind; the square fills from late afternoon.
- Hand your empty mug back at any Glühwein stall for the deposit, or keep it: the 2025 mugs carried the year on the side.
- The public toilets inside the Rathaus at Hauptmarkt 18 cost 50 cents in 2025 and are entered from the Rathausplatz side.
