Which Christmas market should you see first?
Nuremberg gives you the classic German market on one square, and Vienna suits a trip that starts with a flight. Prague and Budapest keep their big markets open past Christmas.
By Adam BognarPublished

Pick Nuremberg for a first Christmas-market trip if you want the classic German market on a single square, and accept that you'll share it: the city counted more than two million visits to the 2024 market. Vienna makes the better first pick if you're flying in, because a train runs from the airport terminals and the Rathausplatz market opens on 13 November 2026. We compared eight cities on the facts in our market and station files. For each one you get who it suits, the drawback that matters, the 2026 dates with the status the organizer gives them, how to get there by train or plane, and the walk from the main station to the market.
| City and market | Suits | Main drawback | 2026 dates and status | Walk from the main station (computed) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt | First-timers who want the famous German market at full size | More than 2 million visits in 2024 | 27 November to 24 December (confirmed) | 1.1 km, about 15 minutes |
| Strasbourg Christkindelsmarik | A first Christmas in France, with eight market sites in one walkable centre | Friday evenings and weekends pack Place Broglie | Opens 27 November (confirmed); 24 December close is projected | 1.3 km, about 18 minutes |
| Vienna Christmas Market at Rathausplatz | Trips that start with a flight and want a long season | Weekend evenings get so tight a stroller barely moves | 13 November to 26 December (confirmed) | No computed walk; take the U-Bahn from Hauptbahnhof |
| Cologne Cathedral Christmas Market | Train arrivals who want stalls under the cathedral towers | Repairs to the garage under the square could shrink it | 16 November to 23 December (confirmed), closed 22 November | 480 m, about 6 minutes |
| Prague Old Town Square Christmas Market | A long weekend that runs past New Year | The busiest and dearest square in Prague | 28 November to 6 January 2027 (confirmed) | 1.2 km, about 17 minutes |
| Dresden Striezelmarkt | Saxon woodcraft and Dresdner Christstollen on one square | Around 2 million visits over four weeks | 25 November to 24 December (confirmed) | 1.3 km, about 17 minutes |
| Colmar Place des Dominicains Christmas Market | A smaller town, with the Alsace wine villages close by | Weekend coach crowds | 23 November to 29 December (confirmed) | 1.2 km, about 15 minutes |
| Vorosmarty Square Christmas Market, Budapest | A first trip with children, or one over New Year | Menus priced for tourists | 13 November to 31 December (confirmed) | No computed walk; take the M2 from Keleti |
The walking figures are computed by us. We route each one on OpenStreetMap with the OSRM foot profile at the site's walking speed, from the city's main station to the market's square, and round the distance for the table. A status of confirmed means the organizer or the city has published the date. A projected date comes from past seasons, so treat it as a likely date until the organizer prints it.
Nuremberg puts the classic German market on one square
Nuremberg suits the first-timer who pictures a German Christmas market and wants that picture at full size. The Christkindlesmarkt fills the Hauptmarkt from Friday 27 November to Thursday 24 December 2026, and the city's own market notice confirms the run. Stalls open 10:00 to 21:00 every day, and Christmas Eve closes at 14:00. The city admits goods tied to Christmas and local craft and keeps rides off the square, so you shop for Nürnberger Lebkuchen, fruit bread, glass and tin ornaments and Rauschgoldengel, the gold-foil angels. In 2025 there were 168 stalls.
The drawback is the crowd. More than two million visits were counted at the 2024 market, and the square fills from late afternoon on 27 November, when the Christkind opens the market at 17:30 from the gallery of the Frauenkirche. Come on a weekday morning soon after 10:00 if you want room to stop at a stall. The city archive records that the Hauptmarkt and the Obstmarkt were laid out, and the Frauenkirche built, on the ground of the former Jewish quarter after the pogrom of 1349.
Trains run from Munich in 71 minutes at the fastest, by Deutsche Bahn's figure, and from Frankfurt in 2 hours 1 minute, so fly into either airport. From Nuremberg Hauptbahnhof the walk to the Hauptmarkt is 1,094 metres, about 15 minutes by our computed route. Take the underpass from the main hall, come up by the Königstor and follow Königstraße past St Lorenz, then cross the Pegnitz on the Museumsbrücke.

Strasbourg spreads its markets across the Grande Île
Strasbourg suits a first Christmas in France, because the city sets out its markets on eight sites inside one walkable island centre. The city traces the Christkindelsmärik on Place Broglie back to 1570. Its chalets run down the long square towards the Opéra, open 11:30 to 21:00 every day. The city confirms that the 2026 market opens on Friday 27 November at 14:00. It hasn't printed the last day yet, so the close on 24 December is projected from past seasons and from its FAQ, which shuts the chalets at 18:00 on Christmas Eve.
Crowds are the catch. Friday evenings and weekends are the densest, and the city's own advice adds Wednesday afternoons, while Mondays and Tuesdays are calmest. During market hours the Grande Île is closed to motor traffic and there are bag checks on the bridges onto the island. On 11 December 2018 a gunman killed five people and wounded eleven in the streets near Place Kléber, and the market closed the next day. Pick a weekday for the big squares, and spend a weekend afternoon in Obernai instead, 28 minutes away by regional train.
Direct TGV trains reach Strasbourg from Paris Gare de l'Est in about 1 hour 45 minutes on SNCF Connect's route page. If you fly, EuroAirport Basel Mulhouse Freiburg is the closest of the gateways we list, and Basel is 77 minutes from Strasbourg by train. The computed walk from Strasbourg station to Place Broglie is 1,324 metres, about 18 minutes. Cross the Place de la Gare, follow Rue du Maire Kuss over the Ill on the Pont Kuss, and take Rue du 22 Novembre to Place Kléber and its great tree. Place Broglie lies a few streets further east.
Vienna opens early and keeps going after Christmas
Vienna suits a trip that begins with a flight, and its season starts early. The Wiener Christkindlmarkt on Rathausplatz runs from 13 November to 26 December 2026, confirmed by the organizer, from 10:00 to 22:00 daily and until 18:30 on Christmas Eve. The ice rink beside it opens on the same day and carries on to 6 January 2027. More than ten markets sit within reach of the U-Bahn, and the first of them open on 6 November.
Weekend evenings are the problem. The organizer counts close to three million visitors a year, and on a Saturday night the paths between the stalls get so tight a stroller barely moves. Weekday mornings after the 10:00 opening are the easiest time to walk the stalls with a pram or a wheelchair.
Vienna Airport station sits beside the terminals, and ÖBB trains run from there toward Vienna Hauptbahnhof. We have no computed walk for Vienna, because the Hauptbahnhof sits south of the centre. Take the U1 from the station to Karlsplatz and change to the U2 for Rathaus. By train, Budapest is 2 hours 37 minutes away at the fastest and Prague 4 hours 13 minutes, by ÖBB's timetable.

Cologne's cathedral market starts at the station steps
Cologne suits a first-timer arriving by train, because Köln Hbf opens straight onto the cathedral and the stalls start at the foot of its steps. The computed walk from Cologne Hauptbahnhof to Roncalliplatz is 482 metres, about 6 minutes. More than 140 huts sit under a canopy of lights strung from one tall tree. The organizer has confirmed 16 November to 23 December 2026, and the market stays shut all day on Totensonntag, 22 November.
The 2026 drawback is the ground under the square. The concrete in the Tiefgarage am Dom has been failing for years, and the city's release of 7 April 2026 set out emergency repairs meant to last into autumn 2026. The dates stand as confirmed. A smaller footprint or a late change could still come, so book a room you can cancel and keep the Markt der Engel and the Heumarkt market as your fallback. Our Cologne status guide tracks it. The cathedral market was cancelled in 2020, and in 2021 it opened only to visitors who could show proof of vaccination or recovery.
Fly into Frankfurt and take the train. Frankfurt to Cologne takes 1 hour 5 minutes at the fastest, by Deutsche Bahn's figure, and Frankfurt Airport has its own long-distance station for ICE trains. Once you're in Cologne, Bonn is 20 minutes away and Aachen 33.

Prague keeps its big square open until Epiphany
Prague suits a long weekend with the postcard version of a Czech Christmas, and it's the city to pick if your dates run past New Year. The Old Town Square market fills the space between the Old Town Hall and the Týn Church from 28 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, confirmed by the organizer Taiko, from 10:00 to 22:00. The crafts lean Czech, with blown-glass and straw ornaments, wooden and ceramic nativity figures, lace, bells and cookie cutters.
This is the busiest and dearest square in the city. Taiko's own figure put a cup of svařák, the Czech mulled wine, at 100 CZK in December 2025. The stage show runs from 16:00 to 19:00, and once the tree lights up the square packs tight around the stage and the astronomical clock. Come before 16:00 on a weekday if you want to see the stalls.
Prague Airport is one of the gateways we list, and the Airport Express bus stops in front of Prague Main Station. From the station the computed walk to Old Town Square is 1,239 metres, about 17 minutes: head north-west to the Powder Tower and follow Celetná straight into the square. The direct EuroCity from Dresden takes 2 hours 11 minutes, and the Railjet from Vienna leaves every two hours.
Dresden fills the Altmarkt with Saxon woodcraft
Dresden suits the visitor who wants Erzgebirge woodcraft and Dresdner Christstollen on the square where the market began in 1434. The city runs the 592nd Striezelmarkt on the Altmarkt from 25 November to 24 December 2026, confirmed on its market site and in its stall tender. The two sources disagree on the opening time on the first day: the site gives 16:00 and the tender 16:30. After that the stalls open 10:00 to 21:00 every day, and Christmas Eve closes at 14:00. The city gave out 216 stall places for 2026, and makers carve and turn in workshops on the square.
The city counts between 2 and 2.2 million visits a year, and Dresden police recorded 51 thefts across the city's Christmas markets in 2025, against 16 the year before. Keep your wallet in an inside pocket. December is also the city's busiest hotel month, so book early.
Trains from Berlin take 1 hour 39 minutes at the fastest, and fewer than half the connections run direct, so look for a through train when you book. Prague is 2 hours 11 minutes away on the EuroCity along the Elbe. From Dresden Hauptbahnhof the computed walk to the Striezelmarkt is 1,278 metres, about 17 minutes. Leave by the north side onto Wiener Platz, follow Prager Straße toward the old town and cross the ring road to the Altmarkt. Trams 1, 2 and 4 stop at Altmarkt if you'd rather ride.

Colmar suits a slower first trip on weekdays
Colmar suits couples and families who want a smaller market town than Strasbourg, with six markets inside one walkable old town and the wine villages a shuttle ride away. All six run from 23 November to 29 December 2026, confirmed on the town's Christmas site. Place des Dominicains has the biggest of them, with around 60 chalets under the Dominican church, and its stock leans toward tree decorations. The markets open 11:00 to 19:00 Monday to Thursday and 10:00 to 20:00 Friday to Sunday, and they stay open on Christmas Day.
Weekends bring the day-trippers and the coach groups. Come Monday to Thursday if you can, and check the tourism office's attendance forecast on noel-colmar.com, which rates each day from low to very high. The village shuttles to Kaysersberg, Riquewihr and Ribeauvillé run on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 27 November to 20 December 2026 at €17 a day per adult.
Colmar is 26 minutes from Strasbourg by train, and a TGV INOUI on that line needs a seat reservation. EuroAirport Basel Mulhouse Freiburg is the nearest airport among our gateways. From Colmar station the computed walk to Place des Dominicains is 1,159 metres, about 15 minutes, north-east along Avenue de la République beside the Champ de Mars park and into the old town at Place Rapp.
Budapest runs its central market into the new year
Budapest suits a first trip with children, or one that falls between Christmas and New Year. The Vörösmarty Square market runs from 13 November to 31 December 2026, confirmed by the organizer, at the top of Váci utca. A free little train loops the square for children, and every big kitchen kept one dish at a fixed low price in 2025, which was 1,600 HUF. The craft stalls and the train finish on 28 December, after which the square turns into a New Year's Eve party that runs until 03:00 on 1 January.
Most of the people around you will be tourists, and the menus are priced for them. Ask for the plain forralt bor, the Hungarian mulled wine, at a hot-drink point if you want the fixed-price cup, which cost 1,500 HUF in 2025. The flavoured cups with a shot in them cost more.
Budapest Airport is one of the gateways we list, and trains from Vienna run every hour, taking 2 hours 37 minutes at the fastest. We have no computed walk for Budapest, because Keleti station sits east of the centre. Take the M2 from the station to Deák Ferenc tér, and Vörösmarty tér is a short walk west at the top of Váci utca.
