Vienna is the best base in Austria for a Christmas-market trip, with more than ten markets open from 6 November 2026 and several still running after Christmas. It suits couples on a long weekend and first-timers who want markets, Advent music and Midnight Mass in one city; the big markets get crowded on weekend evenings.

Who should base here
Vienna has more than ten Christmas markets within reach of the U-Bahn, and the first ones open on 6 November 2026, so a base here covers the whole season. Rathausplatz opens on 13 November 2026, among the earliest of Europe's big markets. Several markets stay open on 25 and 26 December and Schönbrunn runs to 6 January 2027, so a trip over Christmas week still has markets to visit.

The season starts early. Schönbrunn and Stephansplatz open on 6 November 2026, and the big Wiener Christkindlmarkt on Rathausplatz follows on 13 November, along with Spittelberg, Am Hof and the Uni Campus village. Maria-Theresien-Platz returns on 20 November after a year off, and a new market rings the Hochstrahlbrunnen on Schwarzenbergplatz.
Rathausplatz is the big show, with skating outside and choirs inside City Hall. Spittelberg and Art Advent on Karlsplatz lean on crafts. Am Hof mixes antique dealers with Christmas huts and pours its own pine punch, and Schönbrunn brings the palace and stays open to Epiphany.
Music runs through Advent. The Vienna Boys Choir gives its Christmas concert at MuTh and sings Mass in the Hofburg Chapel, and more than 85 choirs pass through City Hall on Advent weekends. On Christmas Eve, St. Stephen's Cathedral holds Midnight Mass.
Day trips reach further. The weekend market at Schloss Hof lies east toward Bratislava, and the WachauerADVENT in Dürnstein and Grafenegg Advent sit up the Danube near Krems.
Worth knowing
- Christmas Eve afternoon is the time for Rathausplatz, which stays open until 18:30, later than any other big market.
- Pair markets by area: Am Hof and the Freyung sit a block apart, and Maria-Theresien-Platz and Spittelberg share the MuseumsQuartier side of the Ring.
- The Advent singing in City Hall is free and warm, Friday to Sunday from 15:30 on Advent weekends.
