- The organizer says the market is step-free. Bikes and scooters aren't allowed among the stalls, and dogs must be on a lead and muzzled.
Am Hof sits a short walk from both the Freyung and the Graben, which makes it easy to string several markets together in one evening. The organizer, Georg Lehner, grew the market out of a weekend art and antiques fair, and the dealers still trade alongside the Christmas huts. In recent years the market has pushed out mass-produced imports in favour of crafts.
Order the Zirbenpunsch. The punch is flavoured with Swiss stone pine and was first poured here in 1999, and the market pitches it at people who find Glühwein too sweet. Since 2014 there's also been a Bock beer brewed for the market.
Under the Mariensäule, presenters from Radio Wien pour punch for the Licht ins Dunkel appeal. The stallholders hand over the full amount collected, and the cheque goes to the charity on the regional TV news just before Christmas.
