The Cologne Cathedral Christmas Market is going ahead in 2026, and its organizer has confirmed a run from Monday 16 November to Wednesday 23 December on koelnerweihnachtsmarkt.com. The market stays shut all day on Totensonntag (22 November). The open question this year sits underneath Roncalliplatz, where the city is repairing the car park below the square (the Tiefgarage am Dom), and that work could still change how much space the stalls get.

Entry is free at all four. The harbour market's dates come from the Chocolate Museum, which hosts it, and the museum's page lists no hours for 24 to 26 December or New Year's Eve.

Why did people think the cathedral market would be cancelled?

The worry started with the concrete under the square. The Tiefgarage am Dom has been failing for years, and late in 2025 Antenne NRW reported warnings that the market could drop out from 2026. When the city put the Roncalliplatz contract out to tender, its terms allowed for a year without a market.

Since then the city has moved the other way. On 3 March 2026 it awarded KW Kölner Weihnachtsgesellschaft the Roncalliplatz contract for 2026 to 2030. A city release of 7 April 2026 said the emergency repairs in the garage should run until autumn 2026, and the next day t-online reported that the short-term work alone costs €4.1 million, and a wider renovation is still to be costed. We found nothing published after April 2026 that changes the market's dates.

The dates stand as confirmed, and nobody has published the final layout yet. The footprint could still shrink, or the plan change late, while the repairs finish, so keep your Cologne plans flexible and know where the other markets are.

Has the Cologne Christmas market been cancelled before?

The cathedral market has been cancelled once. That was in 2020 during the pandemic, and The Local reported the decision that August. When it came back in 2021, the city's 2G rule let in only visitors who could show proof of vaccination or recovery.

Where can you go if the cathedral square loses space?

Cologne has three more big markets inside a short walk or tram ride, and together they cover the whole season. The Markt der Engel on Neumarkt keeps the same dates as the cathedral market and runs from 16 November to 23 December 2026 (confirmed). Costumed angels walk between its white-lit huts with gold glitter for the children, and its three Glühwein stands keep pouring for an hour after the stalls close. That means 22:00 Sunday to Thursday and 23:00 on Fridays and Saturdays.

Heinzels Wintermärchen fills the Heumarkt and the Alter Markt from Monday 23 November 2026, which is the day after Totensonntag, and its organizer has confirmed the run. The theme comes from the Heinzelmännchen, who are the house elves in a poem August Kopisch published in 1836, and more than 100 stalls spread through themed lanes across the two squares. The Heumarkt ice rink loops around the equestrian statue with straights of more than 100 metres. Book a curling lane before you travel, because they sell out early on weekend evenings.

The harbour market at the Chocolate Museum opens first on Friday 13 November 2026 and keeps going to Sunday 3 January 2027 (announced). Its stalls line the Rhine where the Rheinauhafen meets the river. It is also the only big Cologne market that opens on Totensonntag, from 18:00 to 21:00 that evening. From the Heumarkt you can walk south along the Rhine promenade to reach it.

How do you plan a Cologne trip around the garage repairs?

Book a room you can cancel, and check the cathedral market's page again in November. Köln Hbf opens straight onto the cathedral steps. Come on a weekday at 11:00 and you get the square at its emptiest, before the office crowd and the tour coaches arrive.

Cologne Cathedral has charged sightseers €12 since 1 July 2026, with €6 reduced tickets and free entry for children up to 13. Services stay free. The Christmette begins at 24:00 on Thursday 24 December 2026, and Cardinal Woelki celebrates the Pontifical Mass on Christmas Day at 10:00. The cathedral has confirmed both. Each is a Mass and worship first, and anyone who comes to take part is welcome. The cathedral's house rules ask you to cover your shoulders and upper body, and during Mass you take pictures only from your seat and never of individual worshippers without their consent. Large bags and rolling cases stay outside.
