- Friday evenings and weekends are the densest, and the city's own advice adds Wednesday afternoons.

- Mondays and Tuesdays are calmest, and so is any morning soon after the 11:30 opening.
The city traces this market to 1570, which puts the Christkindelsmärik among the oldest Christmas markets in Europe, and it has stood on Place Broglie since the 1870s. Its chalets run down the long square towards the Opéra national du Rhin, so you see it in one straight walk. Come soon after the 11:30 opening on a weekday and you can stop at a stall without the crowd carrying you along.
On 11 December 2018 a gunman killed five people and wounded eleven in the streets near Place Kléber, and the market closed the next day. During market hours the Grande Île is closed to motor traffic and there are access checks on the bridges onto the island. Carry a small bag and expect someone to look inside it.
Worth knowing
- Leave the car at a Park and Ride on the edge of town. It costs €4.20 a day and the price covers a return tram ticket for everyone in the car.
- Trams A, C, D and F all stop close to the market squares, and the Homme de Fer stop by Place Kléber stays open throughout the season.
- Dogs on a lead are welcome, and the city suggests bringing them on a weekday morning when the squares are calmer.
