In the Middle Ages, before the Christkindelsmärik existed, a Klausenmärik or St Nicholas market filled the cathedral square around 6 December, the city says. Wax-chandlers, gingerbread sellers and herbalists traded there. Today the chalets stretch from Place de la Cathédrale to Place du Château and along rue des Hallebardes and rue Gutenberg.
The cathedral stays open through the market and lets visitors in from the Place du Château side between 08:30 and 17:45, Monday to Saturday. Its astronomical clock show doesn't run during the market period, so plan the clock for another trip.
