The Striezelmarkt suits anyone who wants Saxony's Christmas crafts and the Dresdner Christstollen on the square where the market began, and the price is a crowd of around two million visits over four weeks. The 592nd market runs on the Altmarkt from 25 November to 24 December 2026, open 10:00 to 21:00 daily.

Access and crowds
- Getting around
- Dresden's commissioner for disabled people called the Striezelmarkt a good national example of a barrier-free Christmas market in December 2025. The city checked the routes around its markets for people using wheelchairs or pushing prams, and it says a few narrow points at the vehicle barriers can't be avoided.
- Busiest
- The city counts between 2 and 2.2 million visits a year. Its 2025 review says the weekend festivals drew tens of thousands, and Dresden's tourism board reported hotels well filled on the last Advent weekend.
The city runs the Striezelmarkt itself and gave out 216 stall places in 47 trade groups for 2026. The name comes from Striezel, the old Dresden word for the Christmas stollen, and the market began in 1434 as a one-day meat market before Christmas Eve. The market moved often over those 592 years. The city's own chronicle lists a string of squares it used, and it names the 1930s, when the Nazi city leadership staged the market's return to the centre for its propaganda value.
Wood from the Erzgebirge fills a large share of the stalls: pyramids, candle arches, smoking men and nutcrackers, with workshops on the square where makers carve and turn in front of you. Look for the Pflaumentoffel too. It's an edible little figure built from dried prunes, and Dresdeners give it as a lucky charm. Pulsnitz gingerbread and blue-printed cloth from Lusatia turn up between the woodcraft stalls.
Hot drinks come in the market's own ceramic mugs, which change design each year. The city sells Striezeltaler at the Dresden Information pavilion among the show workshops, 11 coins for 10 euros, and the stalls take them as payment. The Stollenfest on Saturday 5 December 2026 brings its parade and a giant stollen to the stage in front of the Kulturpalast at noon.
Worth knowing
- Take tram 1, 2 or 4 to the Altmarkt stop, which sits at the edge of the market; trams 11 and 12 and bus 62 stop at Prager Straße to the south.
- Keep your wallet in an inside pocket. Dresden police recorded 51 thefts across the city's Christmas markets in 2025, against 16 the year before.
- Ask at the Striezelwache, the city's own staff post on the market, for a child safety wristband or to report something lost.
