Advent Bazilika, the Christmas market on Szent István tér in front of St Stephen's Basilica in Budapest, runs from 13 November 2026 to 1 January 2027 and suits anyone who wants the city's best-known market with a light show on the church front every evening. It gets tight and busy, and seating is scarcer than on Vörösmarty tér.

Access and crowds
- Getting around
- Szent István tér is a paved pedestrian square. The Basilica itself has step-free entry through a lift outside the building.
- Busiest
- Economx found the square packed by early afternoon on its visit in late November 2025, with less room to sit than on Vörösmarty tér.
Close to a hundred Hungarian makers set up on the square, and the organizer names ceramicists and leatherworkers among the regulars who have come back for many seasons. The centre belongs to a tall Christmas tree under a canopy of small lights, and a nativity scene with a huge Advent wreath stands in front of the Basilica steps. On Sundays people gather at the wreath to light the week's candle. In 2025 the tree measured 12 metres, and a light tunnel led out toward Bajcsy-Zsilinszky út.
From 17:30 every evening the Basilica's façade turns into a screen, and the projection repeats every half hour, with a concert in front of it on some nights. For the church's 120th birthday in 2025 the organizer added a new film about the building's story and brighter projectors. Plain forralt bor was 1,500 HUF for 3 dl in 2025, and every big kitchen keeps one dish at a fixed price, which was székelykáposzta (pork and sauerkraut stew) at 1,600 HUF that year.
Worth knowing
- The light show starts at 17:30 and repeats every half hour, so you can eat first and catch the next round.
- On 24 December 2026 the market closes at 15:00. On 31 December it stays open until 03:00, and on 1 January it opens from 11:00 to 18:00.
- Cycling is banned on the market grounds, and so are fireworks, including on New Year's Eve.
- Rétes (strudel) at 1,900 HUF in 2025 was one of the better-value sweet things on the square, according to Economx's price check.
