Esslingen suits families and anyone who wants Christmas with jugglers, fire-eaters and half-timbered houses, a short S-Bahn ride out of Stuttgart. The trade-off is the weekend squeeze in narrow lanes, which the organizer itself tells wheelchair users and pram pushers to avoid.

Access and crowds
- Toilets
- Public toilets with accessible cubicles are at the Agneshof, which also has a Toilette für alle, in the Mittlere Beutau underpass and on the Hafenmarkt by the Café am Museum. There is also a paid medieval latrine in front of the Altes Rathaus and a staffed toilet wagon on the Kleiner Markt that asks for a donation.
- Getting around
- The FAQ advises wheelchair users and families with prams to avoid weekends. It does not describe step-free routes through the old town lanes.
- Busiest
- Weekends are crowded enough that the organizer asks wheelchair users and parents with prams to come on a weekday instead.
- Quieter
- Monday to Friday, ideally before dusk, is the time the organizer itself recommends.
Esslingen runs two markets that flow into each other. The ordinary Christmas market with about 80 stalls sits on the Marktplatz below the Stadtkirche St. Dionys, with a historic carousel and a candle workshop. Walk east past the Neues Rathaus and you cross into the medieval half on Rathausplatz, the Kleiner Markt and the Hafenmarkt, where traders in costume sell leather, pottery and mead and the food comes off open fires.
The program is the draw. Three stages fill the afternoons and evenings with acts that change every few days, and the fire performers come out after dark. A fairy-tale tent offers free storytelling with no booking, and the Zwergenland on the Kleiner Markt is set up for small children.
The Marktplatz is being rebuilt with a fountain field that should run in time for the city's 2027 anniversary. Local reporting says the pit for the fountain works has to be filled in before each market, and the organizer's 2026 plan, dated September 2026, shows the Christmas stalls spread across the whole square again.
Worth knowing
- Come on a weekday afternoon and stay into the dark for the fire shows.
- The Stadtinformation on the Marktplatz keeps market-time hours and sells the program.
- Take the footpath from the Kleiner Markt up to the Esslinger Burg for a view over the lit roofs.
