Access and crowds
- Step-free
- Yes, Hellbrunn Advent Market has a step-free route
- Cobbles
- Paved, without cobbles
- Toilets
- Accessible toilets stand on the central aisle and by the playground in the palace park, and there are changing facilities for babies.
- Getting around
- The organizer says most of the market is step-free. Some paths are gravel or packed earth, and snow or ice can make them hard going for wheelchairs and prams. Disabled parking is available, and entry works with the Euro-key.
- Busiest
- Weekend afternoons and evenings, when the car parks fill and the organizer asks visitors to come by bus.
- Quieter
- Tuesday to Friday soon after the 13:00 opening. Entry is free after 19:00, and that's when the evening crowd peaks.
The market spreads through the courtyard of the early-baroque summer palace that Prince-Archbishop Markus Sittikus built between 1613 and 1619, and on into the park behind it. The windows of the front turn into an Advent calendar, and the children's area has a little train, a Christmas post office and animals to look at. Most families stay two to four hours, which the organizer says is the usual length of a visit.
Entry costs €8 until 19:00, and a voucher for one hot drink comes with the ticket, so the fee buys your first mug of Glühwein or punch. Children up to six get in free. After 19:00 you walk in for nothing, and on Christmas Eve the gates are open free from 10:00 until 14:00.
Bus 25 runs from Salzburg Hauptbahnhof through the old town to the Schloss Hellbrunn stop, and on Advent weekends it leaves every ten minutes between 13:00 and 18:00. Drivers pay €3 for the first two hours at the palace car park, which fills on weekend evenings.
Worth knowing
- Get a place in the courtyard in front of the stairs before 18:00 on 4 December if you want to watch the Grossgmain Krampus group. Small children may prefer the Tag der Krampusse on 13 December, when members of the Anif group appear unmasked and let you try on a mask.
- Remember that the market is shut on Mondays, except 21 December.
- Dogs are welcome on a lead, and there's a dog meadow in the palace park.
