Brno's city tourist office (TIC Brno) runs three linked sites under the Brněnské Vánoce name. In 2025 náměstí Svobody held 55 stalls, Dominikánské náměstí had 9, and the courtyard of the Old Town Hall ran a nine-stall Gourmet Vánoce. Freedom Square is the centre of it, with a winter bar, the tree, two concerts a day and a children's programme at 15:00.
The tree carries more weight here than in most cities. Brno says the first public Christmas tree in the country stood on this square in 1924, and the 2026 lighting on 27 November marks its 102nd year. The ceremony starts with carols from 15:30, and the lights go on at 17:00.
Drinks come in returnable cups with a 50 CZK deposit that works at every stall across the TIC Brno sites. You can hand the cup back at any drink stall, keep it, or give it to one of the charity causes in the Daruj kelímek scheme.
Worth knowing
- The deposit refund at the dedicated return stalls goes back to a card only, and it can take up to five working days to show up.
- Free toilets stand at Zelný trh and in the Moravské náměstí park. The shopping centres on náměstí Svobody have paid ones.
- The Zelný trh and Moravské náměstí markets run by the Brno-střed district open two weeks earlier and stay open to 31 December, so Brno still has a market after Christmas.
