The market spreads around the Neptunbrunnen between the red-brick Rotes Rathaus and St. Marienkirche. Lanes of traders lead to the Eiswelt, a round rink of more than 600 square metres where a 90-minute session costs €5 and skate hire €3. Sessions start at 12:00, 14:00, 16:00, 18:00 and 20:00, with an earlier 11:15 start at weekends, and the rink takes no bookings.
Around St. Marienkirche the pace drops. Craft stalls cluster there, a bakery bakes bread in front of you, and a tavern pours hot mead from clay jugs. Children ride historic carousels, the oldest of them over 100 years old, and a little train runs through a snowy fairy-tale wood. Alexanderplatz station is close for the S-Bahn and the U2, U5 and U8, and the U2 also stops at Klosterstraße.
