Koblenz sits where the Moselle runs into the Rhine, and its market threads through seven squares in the old town. The Jesuitenplatz has the town hall's Advent calendar of lit dormer windows, and the Münzplatz is the biggest square, with the food and the younger crowd. Families head to the Josef-Görres-Platz for its little train, and the Zentralplatz has an old wooden Ferris wheel.
Across the Rhine, the Christmas Garden lights up the Ehrenbreitstein fortress from 19 November, and the cable car from the Deutsches Eck takes you up to it. Plan your visit before 23 December if you want the craft stalls, because after that only the food and drink stands stay open.
