About 100 wooden stalls line the lanes of Michelstadt's old town, and a big tree stands on the Marktplatz beside the timber-framed Rathaus of 1484. The market runs on into the courtyard of the Kellerei, the old castle compound that holds the town museum, the Schenkenkeller and a café. Life-size wooden figures carved at the town's woodworking college stand around the market, and a few double as signposts. Children ride a little railway on the Louis-Dagand-Platz.
Local clubs and choirs fill the music programme, which the town publishes from late September. Weekends start earlier, at 11:00, so a Saturday gives you the most daylight among the timber frames before the lights take over.

- The stalls stay shut on Mondays and Tuesdays. Plan a Wednesday-to-Sunday visit.
- The Altstadt car park holds about 1,000 cars and 50 coaches, and the Marktplatz is about 200 metres away. Cars pay 5 euros a day and coaches 10 euros (published by the town).
- Michelstadt has its own station on the Odenwaldbahn, the regional line through the Odenwald. Plan the trip on the RMV or odenwaldmobil.de journey planners.
