Access and crowds
- Getting around
- The organizer publishes no access details. Bergisel is a hill on the southern edge of the city, so expect a climb from the nearest stop.
- Busiest
- Sunday afternoons, when the carol singing runs from 15:30 to 17:30.
- Quieter
- Friday afternoons after the 14:00 opening.
Bergisel is the hill where Andreas Hofer fought in 1809 and where Innsbruck's ski jump now stands, and on Advent weekends it hosts one of the city's seven markets. The organizer pitches it as Christmas the way Tyroleans remember it from childhood, with regional crafts and folk music in a setting with room to linger.
Come for the music. On Sunday afternoons the Tiroler Volksmusikverein leads the whole crowd in Christmas songs from 15:30 until 17:30. Alphorn players from the Stubai valley turn up on two of those Sundays, 22 November and 13 December.
Plan around the calendar. The market shuts from Monday to Thursday except for 7 December, and it closes for good on 20 December.
Worth knowing
- Go on a Sunday for the 15:30 carol singing.
- Pair it with the Wilten market on the way back into town; Wilten opens at 16:00.
