Frankfurt Christmas Market

The Frankfurt Christmas Market runs from 23 November to 22 December 2026 across six squares of the Altstadt, with more than 230 stalls and a 26-metre spruce on the Römerberg. It suits a first night in Germany off a long-haul flight into FRA, because the S-Bahn from the airport runs straight into the city, and its one catch is the early finish on 22 December, two days before Christmas Eve.

Access and crowds
- Toilets
- Low-barrier toilets stand at Paulsplatz, the Paulskirche, Alte Mainzer Gasse, Roßmarkt and Friedrich-Stoltze-Platz.
- Getting around
- The organizer calls the whole market area low-barrier. A limited wheelchair area in front of the Römerberg stage opens on 23 November and 6 December, reached from Limpurger Gasse on the stage's left side.
- Busiest
- The opening evening on 23 November and the Stadtgeläut on 28 November pack the Römerberg, and the tower brass draw a crowd at 18:00 on the evenings they play.
- Quieter
- Weekday mornings after the 10:00 opening are the calmest time to see the Römerberg stalls.
Frankfurt spreads its market along a line that runs from the shopping streets at Hauptwache down through Paulsplatz to the Römerberg and on to the Main embankment, so you can walk the whole thing in one go and finish at the river. The Römerberg is the heart of it, with the gabled Römer on one side and this year's tree, an Austrian spruce from Wald-Königsleiten in the Pinzgau, in the middle. Families should head for the Mainkai, where the children's market has a historic carousel, a craft room and a programme of theatre and stories on a moored Primus Line boat.
The pink-lit Friedrich-Stoltze-Platz runs as Rosa Weihnacht, with wooden huts, hot cocktails and homemade soups, and the city's tourism office notes that the LGBTQ+ community makes it a regular stop. Order a hot Apfelwein somewhere along the way, since cider is Frankfurt's drink and the stalls serve it warm alongside Glühwein.
Two sound rituals give the evenings their shape. Brass players climb to the balcony of the Alte Nikolaikirche at 18:00 on set evenings, and on 28 November the bells of ten city-centre churches ring together for half an hour in the Frankfurter Stadtgeläut. Get to the Römerberg early for either, because the square fills fast once the music starts.
Worth knowing
- The market opens at 10:00 from Monday to Saturday and at 11:00 on Sunday, and every square closes at 21:00.
- There's no market on 24 December. The only thing on the Römerberg that afternoon is the Stadtgeläut, from 17:00 to 17:30.
- Take the U4 or U5 to Dom/Römer, or trams 11, 12 or 14 to Römer/Paulskirche. The organizer provides no event parking.
- Post a card at the tourism office stand under the tree and it gets a special market postmark, as long as it carries a classic stamp.
- The free Künstlerweihnachtsmarkt runs inside the Paulskirche next door if you need a warm half hour indoors.
