St Wolfgang suits couples and slow travellers who like the idea of riding a boat from one village market to the next. It opens only Wednesday to Sunday, so a Monday or Tuesday visit finds the stalls shut.

You walk into the village between four-metre angel figures, and fir trees, candles and tall torches line the lanes beyond. Salzkammergut nativity figures, more than 70 of them, stand life-size through the streets. The Michael-Pacher-Haus holds a craft market. At nightfall the wind players come round, and the big floating lantern lights up the lake off the Uferplatz.
St Wolfgang is one of three villages in the Wolfgangseer Advent, with St Gilgen and Strobl. Boats link all three on market days, and the organizer sells a ticket that lets you hop off at each landing. From Wednesday to Friday the boats call at both the Schafbergbahn and Markt landings in St Wolfgang. At weekends and on 7 and 8 December only the Schafbergbahn landing is served.
Strobl, at the eastern end of the lake, sets its nativity village under a six-metre comet. It has no market page of its own here, so plan it as a stop on the boat between St Wolfgang and St Gilgen.
