- The market sits in the fortress courtyard high above the old town. The Festungsgasse on foot is a steep climb, so anyone who can't manage it should take the Festungsbahn funicular and pay the fare.

- Friday soon after 11:00. The tourist board notes that many Salzburg locals make the trip up at least once each Advent.
The stalls fill the Burghof of Hohensalzburg, the castle above the cathedral, and lean towards local crafts and gift ideas with Salzburg snacks and mulled wine. More than a hundred lit stars hang over the lane on the way up. Brass bands play in the courtyard from 15:30, which brings you to the walls just as the old town lights come on below.
Entry to the market is free if you walk up the Festungsgasse. The Festungsbahn funicular saves the climb for the price of a ticket. The fortress rooms and museums are paid separately and stay open until 18:00 on Advent weekends.

- Pair it with the Domplatz market below, since the way up starts just behind the cathedral.
