Wachau Advent in Durnstein
WachauerADVENT Dürnstein48°24′ N 15°31′ EDurnsteinfrom Nov 20Seasonal
The WachauerADVENT turns the whole Danube town of Dürnstein into a ticketed Advent market on four long weekends between 20 November and 13 December 2026, and it suits couples and day-trippers from Vienna who want a river setting and a market spread through an abbey, a palace hotel and a steamer. Entry costs €12, and the steep, rough lanes make it hard work with a wheelchair or stroller.

Access and crowds
- Step-free
- No step-free route is published
- Cobbles
- Yes, expect cobbles underfoot
- Toilets
- The Advent ship has new toilets on board.
- Getting around
- The organizer says Dürnstein is hard going with limited mobility: the lane from the Danube up to Hauptstraße climbs steeply over rough paving. The ship lies about 500 metres from the car park, and only its entrance deck is step-free; the middle deck is reached by stairs. Wheelchair users with a companion and visitors with a 100% disability rating enter free.
- Busiest
- Saturdays and Sundays bring the coaches and day-trippers.
- Quieter
- The organizer recommends Fridays, which draw far fewer visitors.
Dürnstein sits on a bend of the Danube in the Wachau, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape of vineyards and river villages. For the WachauerADVENT the organizer opens courtyards across the town, decorates the lanes with Christmas trees, and moors the restored DDSG steamer MS Wachau at landing stage 20 as a floating market hall. The children's programme also runs on board.
The stalls sit in four clusters. The heated terrace and two courtyards of the Schlosshotel hold about 30 higher-end exhibitors. The abbey courtyard has fewer stalls and live music. The abbey church hosts choir concerts and tours. Food stands line the riverside path from the ship to the ticket office on Anzuggasse.
The Traunergassl, the lane from the river up to the abbey, is lined with lit trees for 2026. Pack shoes with grip, since it climbs steeply over old paving.
Worth knowing
- Take the train to Krems an der Donau and change to the Wachaubahn for Dürnstein, as the organizer suggests.
- Drivers park at the paid P1 car park by landing stages 21 and 22, which has about 300 extra spaces, and ride the free little road train to the market.
- Buy the €20 three-day ticket if you plan to come back on another weekend; it works on any three market days.
- Dogs on a lead are welcome, including on the ship.
