Münsterplatz holds the smaller share of the Basel market, 44 stalls in 2025, set in a grove of trees on the broad square in front of the cathedral. The draw for families is the Märliwald, a fairy-tale forest where children cast pewter, dip candles, decorate gingerbread and watch a marionette theatre. It closes a day before the stalls, on 22 December 2026, and opens only from 13:30 on weekdays.
Come up here after dark, when the stalls are lit against the red sandstone of the Minster. On the last day, 23 December, the square closes at 18:00.
