How do you see Switzerland's Christmas markets by train?
Zurich puts Basel and Lucerne within an hour by train, and Bern sits 53 minutes from Basel at best. Montreux takes longer and needs a change, so it works best as the last stop.
By Adam BognarPublished

Zurich makes the easiest base for Switzerland's Christmas markets by train, because Basel and Lucerne both sit under an hour away. The fastest train reaches Basel in 52 minutes and Lucerne in 41, and on a December weekday 88 trains run each way between Zurich and Basel. From Basel, Bern is 53 minutes at best. Montreux is the long leg: 92 minutes from Bern on the fastest connection, and every connection we found needs one change, usually at Lausanne. That makes Lake Geneva a better place to end the trip than a day out from Bern.
Every journey figure here is computed from the published Swiss timetable for five dates in December 2026, and the method section near the end explains it. The market dates come from our market files, which we checked on 10 October 2026 against the organizers and the city pages that publish them. We compiled the piece from those sources, and no one from the site rode these trains for it.
| Trip | Fastest (computed) | Typical on Wed 2 Dec (computed) | Trains each way on Wed 2 Dec (computed) | Last train back on Wed 2 Dec (computed) | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zurich to Basel | 52 min | 68 min out, 69 min back | 88 each way | 00:07 from Basel SBB | Most trains are InterRegio services that take 68 minutes or more |
| Zurich to Lucerne | 41 min | 50 min each way | 40 each way | 23:35 from Lucerne | Lucerne's market runs only from 3 to 21 December |
| Basel to Bern | 53 min | 58 min out, 56 min back | 35 out, 34 back | 23:36 from Bern | Bern's Münster market shuts at 18:30 from Monday to Thursday |
| Bern to Montreux | 92 min | 95 min out, 108 min back | 33 out, 46 back | 23:11 from Montreux (into Bern at 01:00) | Every connection needs one change |
"Typical" is the median journey of the day's trains, and "out" means leaving the first town in each pair.
Zurich holds four markets for the evenings between trips
Base yourself in Zurich if you want the most trains and a market on your doorstep every evening. Polarzauber fills the hall of the main station from 19 November to 24 December 2026 (confirmed), with more than 100 stalls under the Lindt Christmas tree, and it closes at 16:00 on Christmas Eve. Nearby on Werdmühleplatz, The Singing Christmas Tree brings more than 40 choirs for free half-hour concerts from 19 November to 23 December (confirmed). Across the Limmat, the Dörfli market strings its huts through the lanes of the Niederdorf on the same dates (confirmed).
Bellevue Noël on Sechseläutenplatz runs from 19 November to 23 December 2026 (confirmed), and 2026 is its first season under that name on the square where the Wienachtsdorf stood from 2015 to 2025. Its hours and stall list were still unpublished in October, so check them before you plan an evening there. The Singing Christmas Tree has its own drawback for daytime visitors, since it opens only at 16:00 on weekdays.

Basel sits 52 minutes from Zurich at its fastest
Basel suits anyone who wants the city's two squares in one afternoon, or a trip that carries on into Alsace. The Basel Christmas market fills Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz from 26 November to 23 December 2026. The canton has confirmed those dates, and both squares open daily from 11:00 to 20:30. Barfüsserplatz has the bigger spread of stalls right by the tram stops. Münsterplatz is calmer and holds a fairy-tale forest for children in front of the Minster, at the top of a short uphill walk.
Pick your train with care on this leg. Of the 88 trains from Zurich on Wednesday 2 December, 55 are InterRegio services taking 68 to 80 minutes, and the IC, ICE, EC and TGV trains do it in 52 or 53 (computed). The last train back leaves Basel SBB at 00:07 and reaches Zurich at 01:24. Our Alsace market trains piece covers the line from Basel to Strasbourg.
Lucerne makes the shortest day out from Zurich
Lucerne suits a short, unhurried browse in the old town. The Lucerne Christmas Market on Franziskanerplatz runs from 3 to 21 December 2026 (confirmed). About 70 stalls stand around the fountain, and they open 11:00 to 20:00 except on the last day, when they close at 19:00. Its drawback is the short season. Anyone arriving in late November or after 21 December finds no market on the square.
Every train on this leg is a direct InterRegio, and on Wednesday 2 December we count 40 each way with a typical ride of 50 minutes (computed). The last weekday train back leaves Lucerne at 23:35. On Saturday 5 December the timetable adds hourly late trains after midnight, and the last one leaves Lucerne at 03:35 on the Sunday morning (computed).

Bern holds three markets an hour from Basel
Bern suits buyers who want handmade gifts and anyone who stays in Switzerland after Christmas. The Berner Münster Weihnachtsmarkt runs from 28 November to 24 December 2026 (confirmed), and every stall sells one-off pieces made in the seller's own workshop. The Berner Sternenmarkt beside the Federal Palace runs from 19 November to 27 December 2026 (confirmed), with a 200-seat fondue chalet and stalls open to 22:00 from Monday to Saturday. It takes no cash and closes on Christmas Day. The city lists the Waisenhausplatz market for 27 November to 24 December 2026 (announced), and the square then holds an Old Year's market from 28 to 31 December.
The Münster market is the one with short hours. It closes at 18:30 from Monday to Thursday, at 20:00 on Fridays and at 18:00 at weekends, so a weekday visitor who wants the cathedral square after dark has a narrow window. From Basel we count 35 trains to Bern and 34 back on Wednesday 2 December, and all of them run direct. A typical ride takes 58 minutes out and 56 back (computed).

Montreux works best as the last stop of the trip
Montreux Noël suits families and couples who want a long lakeside promenade of chalets. The Montreux Noël Christmas Market runs along the quays and Place du Marché from 20 November to 24 December 2026 (confirmed), with 176 chalets and a big wheel, and on Christmas Eve the chalets close at 17:00. The organizer names Monday, Tuesday and Thursday as the calmest days and says Saturday mornings are easier than Saturday afternoons.
Getting there from Bern is the drawback. Every connection in the timetable needs one change, at Lausanne on most trips and at Visp on a few. The fastest takes 92 minutes, and on Wednesday 2 December a typical trip takes 95 minutes out and 108 back (computed). The last train back leaves Montreux at 23:11 and reaches Bern at 01:00, which makes a return day trip long. Spend the night by the lake and leave Montreux as the end of your route.
Weigh the Swiss Travel Pass against the Half Fare Card
Several Swiss rail days in a row can make a pass worth buying. SBB sells the Swiss Travel Pass for unlimited travel on the Swiss Travel System network over consecutive days, or on days you choose within a month with the Flex version. The Swiss Half Fare Card instead cuts fares by up to half for one month. Both are sold only to people who live outside Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Compare each one on SBB's pages against the single tickets for your own route before you buy.

Most Swiss markets close before Christmas Day
No market in this piece opens on Christmas Day. Lucerne closes on 21 December, and Basel, Bellevue Noël, the Dörfli and the Singing Christmas Tree close on 23 December. Polarzauber, the Bern Münster market, Waisenhausplatz (announced) and Montreux Noël all finish on Christmas Eve. On 25 December the Sternenmarkt in Bern is closed too, and it reopens to run until 27 December, while Waisenhausplatz picks up again with its Old Year's market from 28 December.
The timetable we computed barely changes over the holiday. Basel to Bern keeps 35 trains out on every date we checked, from 2 December to New Year's Eve. Zurich to Lucerne drops from 40 trains each way on 2 December to 38 on each holiday date we checked, and Zurich to Basel has 90 trains out on Christmas Day (all computed). The Swiss holiday timetable can still differ on the day, so look up your train in the SBB planner before you set out on 24 or 25 December.
How we worked out the train times
We counted every train in the published Swiss GTFS timetable that stops at both stations on five December 2026 dates: Wednesday 2 December, Saturday 5 December, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's Eve. Where no direct train runs, as between Bern and Montreux, we searched for connections with one change on the same timetable, using its own minimum change times and allowing up to an hour's wait. The fastest time is the quickest train on any of those dates in either direction, and the typical time is the median journey on the day named. The data comes from the 2026 timetable and 2027 timetable datasets. Timetable data: opentransportdata.swiss.
Our leg files hold no SBB-published fastest time for these four legs, so every Swiss journey figure in this piece is computed. Check the SBB planner for your own date before you travel.
