Basel runs one market across two squares. Barfüsserplatz is the busier, lower square with about a hundred stalls and the candle-dipping hut, and Münsterplatz up the hill holds a smaller ring of stalls among trees in front of the red sandstone cathedral, with a fairy-tale forest for children. The canton's market office publishes the dates years ahead, and every run it lists through 2031 opens on the fourth Thursday of November and closes on 23 December.
The Verein Basler Weihnacht dresses the rest of the city. Its 2024 programme hung lights along Freie Strasse and Spalenberg and set up a nativity trail of shop windows between the Spalentor and Schifflände. Those are the streets to walk between the two squares, and they keep their lights on into the first days of January after the stalls have gone.
