The market spreads through the courtyards, the farmyard and the Baroque stables of Schloss Hof. The estate's own animals take part in a living nativity, and a crib exhibition fills the Sala Terrena. Light installations and lit figures run through the grounds after dark.
The children's programme runs all day. There's a gingerbread workshop and a craft table at €4 a piece, pony rides for €1, and a writing room with a post office where children send letters to the Christkind. Magic shows, Kasperl puppet plays and sing-along concerts rotate on the stage in the Barockstall.
For adults the best tickets are the Christmas concerts. An ensemble from the Vienna Philharmonic plays on Sunday 6 December and the Varga Quartett Wien on Tuesday 8 December, each at 16:00 and 17:30, at €19 a seat.
Worth knowing
- A market shuttle bus leaves Vienna from the MAK (Museum of Applied Arts) Hop On Hop Off stop at 14:15 and returns at 18:30, for €6 per adult with children free. Another runs from Bratislava's Mlynské Nivy bus station.
- A Danube boat day trip from the Vienna Marina to Hainburg, with a shuttle on to the market and meals on board, is sold through Schloss Hof's website.
