Freiberg Christmarkt

Freiberg grew rich on silver, and the city dresses its Christmas market in that history. About 90 wooden huts fill the Obermarkt in front of the Rathaus, and many of them take their theme from a mining trade: the stall named after the smelter, who once melted ore into silver, now pours the Erzgebirge Glühwein. A miners' pyramid turns in the middle of the square.

The calendar runs on mining custom. Children open the market on 24 November with a fairy-tale procession and set the pyramid turning. On the Saturday before Advent 2 the miners' guild carries torches through the old town in the Bergparade im Fackelschein. The Fest des Bergmanns on Advent 3 brings a smaller procession, and in 2025 the miners closed their Year of the Hewer there and passed the baton to the Year of the Klaubejunge. Klaubejungen were the boys who sorted the ore by hand.

Freiberg Cathedral stands a few minutes' walk from the Obermarkt, and on 5 December 2026 its choirs sing Bach's Christmas Oratorio in two performances. Ice skating at Schloss Freudenstein and lantern walks through the old town fill out the Advent program, and more than 250 shops trade in the lit streets around the market.
