Budapest suits a long weekend of Christmas markets from mid-November to New Year, with its two big markets on Vörösmarty tér and in front of St Stephen's Basilica open from 13 November 2026 and still running on New Year's Eve. Both are aimed squarely at visitors, so expect crowds and prices set for tourists, and head to Óbuda for a neighbourhood market.

Who should base here
Budapest's two central markets sit a short walk apart in District V and open every day from 13 November 2026, the Vörösmarty market until 31 December and Advent Bazilika until 1 January 2027. Because they run straight through Christmas, a trip in the week between Christmas and New Year still finds them open, and the Opera's Nutcracker plays most of that week too. Base yourself between Deák Ferenc tér and the Basilica and you can walk to both markets and catch metro line M1 to the Opera.

Budapest keeps its Christmas in the centre of Pest. Vörösmarty tér at the top of Váci utca and Szent István tér in front of the Basilica hold the two markets most visitors mean, and the city's own market with an ice rink fills Városháza Park and Deák tér between them. All three were open from mid-November in 2025, and the two big ones ran past New Year's Eve into the early hours.
Out in Óbuda, on the Buda side to the north, the district council runs Advent in Óbuda on Fő tér with a free ice rink and free weekend concerts. In 2025 it ran from 28 November to 23 December and opened only in the afternoon on weekdays. For music, the Opera House on Andrássy út stages The Nutcracker from 20 November 2026 to 10 January 2027, and Matthias Church on the Castle Hill sang Beethoven's Mass in C major at its Christmas Day high Mass in 2025.
Worth knowing
- Plain forralt bor was 1,500 HUF at the hot-drink points of both central markets in 2025, and every big kitchen there sold one dish at a fixed 1,600 HUF.
- The craft stalls on Vörösmarty tér close after 28 December, so do your gift shopping before then.
- Parts of District V, including Vörösmarty tér and Szent István tér, banned fireworks from 28 December at 18:00 to 1 January at 06:00 in the 2024 season.
