Innsbruck packs its Christmas into a small centre. The Old Town market fills the lane under the Golden Roof, and Marktplatz on the river is the family market with a crystal tree. Maria-Theresien-Straße opens later and carries on to Epiphany after most of the others have closed. Above the city, Hungerburg sits at the top of a funicular, and Bergisel to the south opens only at weekends.
Plan two evenings at least. Spend one in the Old Town and Marktplatz, and give the other to Hungerburg at dusk with the Wilten or St. Nikolaus market afterwards. Add the Christkind procession on 20 December or one of the Krampus runs in early December if your dates line up.
The city also works as a hub. Hall in Tirol runs a market every day to Christmas Eve on its old town square, and Rattenberg lights its lanes with candles on Advent weekends. Both lie east along the Inn Valley line.
Worth knowing
- Stay in or near the Old Town so you can walk between the city markets and the Hofgarten.
- Shop before 20:00 in the Old Town and 20:30 on Marktplatz, when the craft stalls close and the food stands stay on.
