The Innsbruck Christkind Procession (Christkindleinzug) is a free parade on the last Sunday of Advent in which more than 400 children dressed as shepherds and angels walk with sheep beside the Christkind's carriage, and it suits families with children who can wait in the cold. In 2026 it starts at 17:00 on Sunday 20 December on Maria-Theresien-Straße, as confirmed by the Bergweihnacht organizer.
In Austria the Christkind brings the presents, and on the last Sunday before Christmas Innsbruck's Christkind rides through the city centre in an ornate carriage. More than 400 children dressed as shepherds and angels walk around it with live sheep. The Christkind is a young person chosen for the role, so photograph them as you would any member of the public.
The route starts on Maria-Theresien-Straße, crosses the Marktgraben and ends on the square in front of the Tiroler Landestheater. Pick one spot along it and stay put. The Maria-Theresien-Straße market stays open until 21:00 for a warm drink afterwards.
Worth knowing
- Find a place on Maria-Theresien-Straße by about 16:30; children at the front see the sheep up close.
- Head to the Landestheater end if you want to see the procession arrive.
