Access and crowds
- Getting around
- Brixen Tourismus asks visitors who need step-free routes to contact its information office before the visit for the current accessible entrances. The light show in the Hofburg has step-free access.
Brixen keeps its market on the Domplatz, under the twin towers of the cathedral. The organizer asks stallholders for goods made or finished in South Tyrol, so you find candles and woodwork from the province beside stalls serving homemade Glühwein and sweet Krapfen. It feels like a town market first, with locals meeting after work at the food stalls.
Time your evening around the Hofburg. The prince-bishops' palace sits a few steps from the square, and its courtyard turns into a 20-minute light and music show twice a night. Book ahead for a Saturday, or buy at the box office with a DB or ÖBB train ticket and take €2 off.
Brixen sits on the Brenner line between Innsbruck and Bolzano. DB and ÖBB Railjet trains stop five times a day on their way between Munich and Italy, so Brixen slots into a rail trip without a change.
Worth knowing
- Pair the market with the 17:30 light show in the Hofburg, then eat at the food stalls, which stay open to 21:00.
- Show your DB or ÖBB rail ticket at the Hofburg box office for €2 off the light show.
- Come on a Saturday in Advent if you want the food stalls open until 22:00.
