Who should base here
St Wolfgang suits a couple who want lake views, a boat between markets and a quiet night in a small place. The market shuts on Mondays and Tuesdays, so time your stay for the second half of the week.
Things to do in St Wolfgang
The village grew up around a pilgrimage church on the north shore of the Wolfgangsee, and Michael Pacher's late-Gothic altar has stood in it since 1481. In Advent the lanes fill with life-size nativity figures, more than 70 in all, and a craft market moves into the Michael-Pacher-Haus. The floating lantern on the lake carries the Peace Light and stands 16 metres tall.
The Schafbergbahn rack railway starts here, and in Advent it climbs to the Schafbergalm. Boats cross the lake to Strobl and St Gilgen on market days, so you can see all three villages without a car.
Worth knowing
- Take the Wednesday lantern cruise.
- Children up to 14 ride the Advent boats and the SchafbergBahn free on Advent Sundays.
