Bad Ischl suits a traveller who wants a calm, comfortable base between Hallstatt and the Wolfgangsee, with cake at Zauner and a small craft market. Its Advent is low-key, so come for the town as much as the market.

Who should base here
Bad Ischl is the base for the inner Salzkammergut in December, with a railway station, cafés open into the evening and Hallstatt and the Wolfgangsee within reach. Its own market is small, so the town works best as a bed between day trips.

Things to do in Bad Ischl
Emperor Franz Joseph took Bad Ischl as his summer residence in 1849, and the Kaiservilla still stands on the edge of town. The spa-town feel carries into Advent with lit streets and decorated shop windows. In 2024 the town was a European Capital of Culture.
The town's artisans run their Christmas market in the Trinkhalle, which opens on 20 November 2026. In 2025 it kept Wednesday-to-Sunday days. In the 2025 season a food village stood next door into January, and the town museum showed nativity scenes from late November to the end of January.
Worth knowing
- Use Bad Ischl as your base for a Hallstatt day on 8 December, then come back for the evening.
- Order the Zaunerstollen at Zauner.
