The pilgrimage town sits in the hills of northern Styria, close to the Lower Austrian border. The Mariazell Advent fills the Hauptplatz below the basilica from 19 November to 20 December 2026, Thursday to Sunday, under a hanging Advent wreath that the organizer bills as the largest in the world. Concerts in the basilica start at 19:00 or 20:00 on most market nights, opening with the Vienna Boys' Choir on 19 and 20 November.
The Bürgeralpe cable car leaves from close to the market and takes you up to the Lichterzauber, a lit trail on the mountain that opens at 16:30. On the opening weekend there are lantern walks at 16:00 from the Volksbank, and on Saturday 21 November the Krampus groups run on the Hauptplatz at 19:00.
The Mariazellerbahn from St. Pölten is the usual rail route in, and buses replace it from 2 to 20 November 2026 for engineering work. The line's operator gives no Advent timetable on its home page, so check it before you book.
