Watch the Krampus run if you want to see the Alpine custom up close, with carved masks and cowbells on the market square. It is loud and physical, so keep small children and anyone nervous well back from the route.
Regional Krampus groups parade across the Hauptplatz at 19:00 on Saturday 21 November 2026, the opening weekend of the Mariazell Advent. The organizer singles out their hand-carved masks. In 2023 the run came on the same Saturday of the opening weekend, at 18:00, with St Nicholas walking alongside.
Krampus figures in full costume come close to the crowd, and some children find them frightening. Nobody has to take part. Stand at the back if you'd rather just watch, tell children beforehand what's coming, and walk away if it gets too much.
