Maastricht is the best base for the Christmas season in South Limburg, and it suits couples and families who want a walkable old city with late hours, though its own market leans towards skating, rides and food. Magisch Maastricht runs from 27 November to 27 December 2026, centred on the Vrijthof, and Valkenburg's cave markets are a short train ride east.

Who should base here
Maastricht gives you a compact old centre with the Vrijthof market open until midnight, or 01:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, and Valkenburg's cave markets a short train ride away. Staying here lets you take a cave slot in the afternoon and still be back on the Vrijthof for dinner and the lights.

In December Maastricht dresses its old centre under the name Magisch Maastricht. The heart of it is the Vrijthof, where a covered ice rink, a 45-metre Ferris wheel and rows of chalets fill the square in front of the Basilica of Saint Servatius. From there the light routes lead into the quarters, from the boutique streets of the Stokstraatkwartier to Wyck across the river. Visit Maastricht even has a piece on why the Vrijthof is worth a morning visit.
Use Maastricht as your base for Valkenburg. Trains run from Maastricht to Valkenburg station, and the city has a wider choice of hotels and restaurants. Aachen and its Christmas market sit just over the German border if you have a spare day.
Worth knowing
- Do Valkenburg on a weekday: the caves and the Vrijthof both name the weekend as their busiest time.
- Load the Magische Cashcard on your phone before you reach the Vrijthof to skip the booth queue.
- The Basilica of Saint Servatius opens at 10:00 from Monday to Saturday, and its treasury makes a calm stop off the square.
