Frankfurt is where most North American trips to Germany's Christmas markets begin, because FRA sits a short S-Bahn ride from a market that runs across six squares of the rebuilt Altstadt. Base here for your first night or two and for day trips to Mainz, Wiesbaden and the Odenwald, and know that once you leave the Römerberg the centre turns to office towers.

Who should base here
Stay in Frankfurt in December for the arrival logistics. You land at FRA, ride the S-Bahn into town and can stand on the Römerberg the same afternoon, and from Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof the S8 reaches Mainz and Wiesbaden while regional trains run out to Michelstadt. The 2026 market runs from 23 November to 22 December, so arrivals after the 22nd find the squares cleared.

Here's how a first evening works off an overnight flight. Follow the signs marked S and T at Terminal 1 down to the regional station on the lowest level, where the S8 and S9 leave for central Frankfurt. If your airline uses the new Terminal 3, the airport says the SkyLine train takes about 10 to 15 minutes to reach the stations, so add that to your plan. Ride to Hauptbahnhof if your hotel is there, or to Hauptwache if you want to walk straight into the market, because the Hauptwache and Roßmarkt stalls begin at the top of the station steps.
Drop your bags, sleep for two hours at most, and head out around dusk. Walk south from Hauptwache through Paulsplatz to the Römerberg, where the tree and the Römer's stepped gables make the picture everyone came for. If you land on 23, 25 or 28 November or on 2, 5, 9, 12, 16 or 19 December 2026, be on the square at 18:00, when the tower brass play from the balcony of the Alte Nikolaikirche. Keep the first evening short and close to the Römer. Drink a hot Apfelwein, eat something from the stalls and be back in bed before the market shuts at 21:00, so the jet lag doesn't swallow the next day.
For a sit-down supper cross the Eiserner Steg to Sachsenhausen and eat at an Apfelwein tavern on Schweizer Straße. Zum Gemalten Haus has served cider since 1936 and is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Apfelwein Wagner a few doors along opens from 11:00 to midnight. Order Grüne Soße or Rippchen mit Kraut, and know that cider comes in a grey stoneware jug called a Bembel.
Worth knowing
- Rail & Fly tickets bundle the train with your flight if you're heading straight on to another city, and the airport recommends them for air travellers.
- If you need step-free access, tracks 2 and 3 at the airport's regional station have elevators to the departure level, and DB's mobility service asks for at least one working day's notice for boarding help.
- The market closes on 22 December and nothing reopens on the 24th, so a Christmas arrival is better spent in Mainz, whose market runs to the 23rd.

Quick answers about Frankfurt
How do I get from Frankfurt Airport to the Christmas market?
Take S-Bahn line S8 or S9 from the regional station under Terminal 1 into central Frankfurt. Get off at Hauptwache to walk straight into the market's northern squares, or change at Hauptbahnhof for the U4 or U5 to Dom/Römer for the Römerberg.
Can I visit the Frankfurt Christmas Market on the day I land?
Yes. The Frankfurt Christmas Market stays open until 21:00 every day from 23 November to 22 December 2026, so a morning arrival leaves time to check in, rest and reach the Römerberg by dusk.
Is Frankfurt a good base for Christmas markets?
Yes, for the Rhine-Main markets. The S8 runs from Frankfurt to Mainz and Wiesbaden, and Michelstadt in the Odenwald has its own station on a regional line.
