The Bolzano Christmas Market on Waltherplatz is the oldest Christmas market in Italy, held since 1991, and suits anyone who wants an Alpine market that keeps going past Christmas, though its 112 stalls draw about a million visitors a season. In 2026 it opens at 17:00 on 26 November and runs to 6 January 2027, with craft stalls open daily 10:00–19:00; the organizer has confirmed the dates.

Access and crowds
- Getting around
- The organizer publishes no access details for the squares. Waltherplatz is a large open square, and the stalls along the Eisackstraße run through narrower old-town streets.
- Busiest
- The organizer counts about 1 million visitors a season. Decorated Christmas trains run up from Milan Garibaldi on the first weekends of the market, so expect those Saturdays to fill up.
Waltherplatz is the heart of it. The wooden stalls fill the square under the cathedral's patterned tile roof and spill onto the Pfarrplatz and the Domplatz beside it. This year craft stalls also line the Eisackstraße from the cathedral down to the Kapuzinerpark. The station sits just south of the square, so you can step off a train and be holding a mug of Glühwein almost at once.
South Tyrol cooks in two languages, and the food stalls show it. Look for Zelten (a dense Christmas loaf packed with dried and candied fruit) and slices of apple strudel. Woollen slippers and loden hang from the rafters of the craft huts. The food stalls stay open until 22:00 or 23:00 before Christmas, well after the craft stalls shut at 19:00.
Bolzano works as a hub for the other original South Tyrol markets. Merano, Brixen, Bruneck and Sterzing all sit on the regional rail network, and the organizer points visitors to suedtirolmobil.info for timetables. If you want snow as well, the Ritten plateau above the city holds its own small market at Oberbozen and Klobenstein.
Worth knowing
- Buy gifts before 19:00, when the craft huts close and the evening turns to food and drink.
- Come back after Christmas if you can. From 27 December to 6 January the market runs daily and the food stalls close at 21:00.
- Leave your bag at Base Camp Dolomites on platform 1 if you are passing through by train.
