This year's LUMAGICA in the Hofgarten works as an outdoor gallery. More than 50 artists, from professionals to school pupils and street artists, show their work as backlit prints along a circular path, each one staged with its own lighting and music. Along the way you can play with sound-to-light stations and laser painting, and a spot called Be Creative where visitors add to a shared piece.
The Hofgarten is the old court garden next to the Hofburg and the Landestheater, a few minutes on foot from the Golden Roof. Stalls along the route sell Glühwein and hot chocolate with sweet and savoury food, so you can walk it straight after a market without stopping for dinner first.
Buy online. The box office at the gate charges €2.60 more per adult and the organizer warns that entry is not guaranteed there. Dogs on a lead are allowed, though the organizer points out that the music and lights can upset them.
