German Christmas Museum, Rothenburg
Deutsches Weihnachtsmuseum49°23′ N 10°11′ E
The German Christmas Museum suits a family or a collector who wants the history behind the ornaments sold downstairs, for €5 an adult. The museum says it is not barrier-free, and the way in is a stair inside the shop.
Käthe Wohlfahrt runs the museum on the upper floor at Herrngasse 1, and a stair inside the Weihnachtsdorf takes you up. Several rooms hold decorations from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Look for the rare tragacanth, glass, cotton-wool and tin ornaments and the fine spun work in Leonese wire. Panels explain how St Nicholas, the Christkind and the Weihnachtsmann differ.
Entry runs from 10:00 to 17:00 every day. In Advent 2026 the museum stays open later, to 17:30 from Monday to Thursday and to 18:00 on Friday and Saturday. On 24 and 31 December it closes at 13:00, and Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day run to 16:30. After 6 January 2027 the hours shrink, so ring +49 9861 409365 for the day's times in January.
Worth knowing
- Buy the €11 family ticket if you're two adults with children up to 14.
- Children aged 6 to 11 pay €2.
