Michelstadt is a half-timbered Odenwald town of about 15,000 people whose Christmas market wraps around a Rathaus built in 1484, and it suits a day trip from Frankfurt from Wednesday to Sunday. The market is shut on Mondays and Tuesdays, which is the one thing to plan around.

Who should base here
A day trip covers the market, and an overnight lets you see the old town lit and empty once the stalls close at 20:00 or 21:00. The town calls itself the oldest and largest in the Odenwald, with a history going back to the 8th century.
Michelstadt's half-timbered Rathaus of 1484 stands on the Marktplatz, and in Advent the town tree goes up beside it. Around 100 stalls run through the lanes and into the Kellerei courtyard, where the town museum sits. The town publishes its programme of choirs and local music from late September.
Worth knowing
- Check the day before you go: the market is closed every Monday and Tuesday.
- Use the RMV or odenwaldmobil.de planners for the Odenwaldbahn trains to Michelstadt station.
