Who should base here
A night in Gengenbach lets you watch the 18:00 window opening without counting down to the last train, then walk the old town once the Adventsmarkt stalls close at 20:00. If the town's own beds are full, Offenburg lies a short ride down the Kinzig valley on the Black Forest Railway.
Things to do in Gengenbach
Gengenbach is a small town in the Kinzig valley on the Black Forest Railway, with Offenburg below it and Hausach further up the line. Every Advent since 1996 its Rathaus on the market square has turned into what the town calls the world's largest Advent calendar house. One of the 24 windows opens at 18:00 each evening from 30 November to 23 December, and the Adventsmarkt fills the square around it from 27 November in 2026.
Museum Haus Löwenberg stands a few steps from the Rathaus and has shown the original artworks behind the windows in recent seasons. The Black Forest tourist board's 2026 Advent package adds the Narrenmuseum in the Niggelturm, whose tower looks out over the lit old town. The town told the dpa news agency in 2025 that about 120,000 guests come each year, Weekday afternoons from 14:00 give you the stalls before the stage program and the evening ceremony begin.
Once the market closes on 23 December, the calendar stays on view until 6 January. Coming between Christmas and Epiphany means you see all 24 windows lit at once with the stalls gone.
Worth knowing
- Arrive while the stage program is still running if you want to face the Rathaus for the 18:00 opening. The ritual reveals the window for the following day.
- Take the train: Gengenbach station sits a short walk west of the Marktplatz on the Black Forest Railway from Offenburg.
- The full calendar stays lit for viewing until 6 January, long after the Adventsmarkt has packed up.
