Romantik Hotel Markusturm suits couples who want a family-run house beside the old Markus gate tower, where staff park the car and carry the bags. The listed building has no lift, so every room is up the stairs.
Highlights
- Staff carry bags and park your car
- The house dates back to the 13th century
- The Goldene Ringgasse apartment sleeps five
The house goes back to the 13th century and takes its name from the Markusturm, the old town gate it leans against, a short way east of the Marktplatz. The Berger family runs it in the fourth and fifth generations. Each room is different. Some have a canopy bed, one has a tiled stove, and one has a bathtub set against the town wall. A Classic room costs €180 a night, a Superior €220 and a Deluxe €270.
Because there's no lift, staff take your luggage up and park your car on the hotel's own lot 190 metres away. Check-in starts at 14:00, and the hotel says you can keep the room until about 11:30 and leave the car and bags with them all day. The restaurant in the house closes one day a week on a changing day, so book a table by 17:30. An apartment in the Goldene Ringgasse sleeps up to five, from €170 for two, with breakfast in the hotel at €10 a head.
