Mariazell Basilica
Basilika Mariazell47°46′ N 15°19′ E
This is Austria's great pilgrimage church, and in Advent it doubles as the concert hall for the Mariazell market. Expect to share it with pilgrims and the dawn Rorate Masses as well as concert crowds.

Tradition dates Mariazell to 1157, when a monk named Magnus from St. Lambrecht built a wooden cell here for a small statue of the Virgin. That linden-wood statue, about 48 centimetres tall, still stands at the heart of the church and is known as Magna Mater Austriae. Domenico Sciassia rebuilt and enlarged the church in the Baroque style from 1644, and Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach designed the high altar. Pope Pius X made it a minor basilica in 1907.
In Advent the basilica opens about 07:30 to 19:00. Rorate Masses start at 06:00 on weekdays and Sundays, celebrated by candlelight before dawn, and Mass follows at 11:15. During the Mariazell Advent market most weekend evenings bring a concert to the nave, starting with the Vienna Boys' Choir on 19 and 20 November 2026. On Christmas Eve 2025 the basilica held a children's nativity service at 15:00 and Midnight Mass at 22:00.
