Mainz Cathedral

Mainz Cathedral is the thousand-year-old red sandstone seat of the Bishop of Mainz, and the Christmas market fills the square at its door. It suits anyone who wants Sunday Mass or a warm pause from the stalls, and it closes to sightseeing during services.

The cathedral holds Mass at 7:00, 8:00, 10:00 and 11:30 on Sundays and holidays, with the 10:00 service sung as the Stiftsamt. Outside those times it is usually open on weekdays from 9:00 to 17:00 and on Sundays and holidays from 13:00 to 17:00. The Gotthard Chapel, whose nativity figures face the market in Advent, opens daily for private prayer from the Markt side.
