Innsbruck Cathedral (Dom zu St. Jakob) is the Baroque mother church of the Diocese of Innsbruck a few steps from the Golden Roof, worth a visit for Lucas Cranach the Elder's Mariahilf painting, though sightseeing waits until after the morning Mass. In December it opens daily from 08:30 to 18:30, with sightseeing from 10:15 Monday to Saturday and from 12:30 on Sundays and holidays.

Step off the Old Town market and into the cathedral for ten quiet minutes. It is an 18th-century Baroque church dedicated to St James, and above the high altar hangs Mariahilf, Mary of Succour, painted by Lucas Cranach the Elder. Its largest bell, the Mariahilfglocke, is the second-largest historic bell in Tyrol.
Mass comes first here. On Sundays the 10:00 and 11:30 Masses fill the morning, which is why visitors are asked to wait until 12:30 to look around. A Mass is worship first, so sit toward the back if you have come to listen, and stay to the end if you come in at the start.
Worth knowing
- Visit on a weekday after 10:15, when the morning Mass has finished and the church is quiet.
- Check the parish website in December for the Christmas Eve and Christmas Day Mass times.
