Freiburg Minster is the Gothic cathedral at the centre of Freiburg's old town, and in Advent it suits visitors who want the tower view or a half-hour of organ music between market stops. Masses come first, and sightseeing pauses during every service.

The Minster stands on the Münsterplatz a short walk from the Rathausplatz, where the Christmas market has its centre. It is one of the few large Gothic churches finished in the Middle Ages, and it came through the wars almost undamaged, according to the cathedral's own page. On the way up the tower you pass the bell frame that carpenters began in fir in 1290. It stands 18 metres tall and is still 80 per cent original.
On Saturdays at 11:30 until Christmas the Minster's organists play a recital of about 25 minutes across its four organs. Tickets cost €5, and the day's sale opens at the main door at 11:00. Guided tours inside need booking through the c-punkt MÜNSTERFORUM, and an open tour leaves from there at 14:00 Monday to Saturday.
Worth knowing
- Check the Minster's service list before you go, since sightseeing stops during Mass.
- The top tower gallery closes in winter, so in December the climb stops short of the 70-metre gallery.
