The Alte Nikolaikirche is the late-Gothic church on the south side of Frankfurt's Römerberg whose carillon opens the Christmas market and whose balcony holds the tower brass at 18:00 on set evenings. You hear it from the square more than you visit it.

Founded in the mid-12th century as a court chapel and shaped as it stands now in the 15th, the church is named for St Nicholas, patron of fishermen, which suits a building this close to the Main. The Protestant Paulsgemeinde has worshipped here since 1949, and an Indonesian Protestant congregation has made it its home since 2006. Its bells join the Frankfurter Stadtgeläut on 28 November and Christmas Eve.
