The Kreuzkirche stands at the corner of the Altmarkt, and in Advent the Striezelmarkt fills the square beside it. It's home to the Dresdner Kreuzchor, and the choir sings at many of its vespers and services. The city's central mug-washing station for the Striezelmarkt sits beside the church.
The church traces its Saturday vespers to a margrave's charter of 1 March 1371, and it says they have run without a break for 650 years. Each one sets music around a short sermon, from large cantata performances to unaccompanied choral works, and some weeks bring guest ensembles in place of the Kreuzchor. The Sunday morning service usually repeats much of the music for free.
Worth knowing
- Buy a four-programme voucher for 15 euros at the box office if you plan more than two Saturday vespers.
- Come to the Sunday service at 09:30 to hear much of Saturday's music without the programme fee.
