The Hungarian State Opera House on Andrássy út is where Budapest goes to see The Nutcracker each December, with performances from 20 November 2026 to 10 January 2027. Book ahead for the holiday matinées, and note that the family discount does not cover this ballet.

Miklós Ybl designed the neo-Renaissance house on Andrássy út, and it reopened on 12 March 2022 after almost five years of restoration and modernisation. Surtitles in Hungarian and English run above the stage, with seat-back screens in most of the stalls. The nearest stop is Opera on metro line M1, which also stops at Vörösmarty tér beside the Christmas market.
Worth knowing
- The Opera has two houses, so check that your ticket says the Opera House on Andrássy út and not the Eiffel Art Studios.
- Boxes are sold whole, so a single seat in a box is not on offer.
