Vienna Tourist Board counts more than two million LED lights across 32 shopping streets once the illuminations are all up, strung on almost 200 kilometres of cable and run on green electricity. The old town has the best-known pieces. The chandeliers over the Graben are the classic, and the Annagasse lights spell out the first bars of Silent Night.
Walk from the Graben through Habsburgergasse and the Kohlmarkt, then cut across to the Neuer Markt for the 48 Sisi stars. Rotenturmstraße's giant red baubles lead down from Stephansplatz towards Schwedenplatz. Outside the centre, Neubaugasse hangs Moravian stars and Servitengasse wraps its trees in about 10,000 lights.
Worth knowing
- Combine the walk with the Am Hof and Stephansplatz markets, which sit at either end of the Graben.
